Welcome to Dwight-Englewood School: Reflections from Dr. James Calleroz White P’27, ’28, ’33, Head of School
“My hope is that our mission is renewed each year in spirit and purpose, not only in our classrooms, but in the relationships we build, the grace we extend, and the confidence we place in the next generation.”

Our mission is not something we hang on a wall; it lives in our relationships, our curriculum, and our daily practice. We seek excellence in all that we do, we honor integrity as the foundation of learning and leadership, and we embrace diversity as a source of strength, perspective, beauty, and innovation. Students here are encouraged to think deeply, act ethically, and contribute meaningfully.
We are equally committed to building and sustaining a community where every individual is seen, valued, and respected. Rooted in our vision, we continuously work to grow a school culture that affirms the dignity of all people while embedding the values of respect, honesty, judgment, community, courage, and commitment.
From the earliest years through graduation, students at D-E explore a dynamic academic program that inspires curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Our classrooms are spaces of intellectual energy and deep engagement. But the learning doesn’t stop there. Our school is intentionally designed to nurture and support every student’s intellectual growth, personal development, and creative expression. Across all three divisions, Lower, Middle, and Upper, we prioritize academic excellence, artistic exploration, and athletic engagement, helping students discover their passions and purpose along the way. Regardless of what area or areas your students dive into, we encourage them to think critically, collaborate meaningfully, and lead with empathy. They’re encouraged to ask big questions, explore new ideas, and take intellectual risks, skills they carry with them long after graduation, indeed, the true skills that they will need to navigate an increasingly complex and multifaceted world.
Students also find voice and expression in award-winning arts programs, discover teamwork and resilience on our competitive athletic fields, and connect with nature in our indoor and outdoor learning environments, which span over 40 acres of woods, gardens, fields, and open spaces.
They are scientists and actors, athletes and poets, leaders and listeners. They are known, supported, and challenged by dedicated educators who meet them with high expectations, genuine care, and the type of love and support that nurtures our students to aspire to be their very best selves.
At Dwight-Englewood, your child will be part of something purposeful and enduring. They will build lifelong friendships, cultivate the confidence to lead, and develop the wisdom and empathy to serve. And you, as parents and caregivers, will be welcomed as essential partners in this journey.
We know that Dwight-Englewood is more than a school; it is a place to belong. A place that is both inspirational and aspirational. At Dwight-Englewood, we believe that learning flourishes in the context of strong and deep-rooted relationships, meaningful and appropriate challenges, and joyful and transformative discovery.
Come see what’s possible when a school is grounded in mission, shaped by community, and focused on the future. We are more than a destination for learning; we are a launchpad for life, preparing students not just for college, but for thoughtful, engaged, and courageous lives.
We invite you to discover for yourself what makes D-E a truly extraordinary place for students to learn and grow.
