Taking Learning to the Field

What’s it like to work in the sports industry? Students in Upper School History Teacher Peter Waltman’s Sports in American Life class got an up-close look during a field trip to Red Bull New York’s High School Career Day at Sports Illustrated Stadium, home of the New York Red Bulls.

The experience gave students the opportunity to step inside the professional sports world, hear from industry professionals, and explore the many careers that make game day happen. From sales, ticketing, and partnerships to videography and game-day production, students discovered the diverse talents and teamwork behind a professional soccer organization. A behind-the-scenes stadium tour, including a visit to the players’ locker room and a chance to walk onto the field, made the experience even more memorable.

For Avery Rothchild ’28, the opportunity brought classroom learning to life. “Rather than just hearing about someone’s job, we got to see where they work, understand their responsibilities, and experience the environment they are part of,” Avery reflected. “It exposed us to career paths we may have never considered before.”

As Mr. Waltman shared, the day was a wonderful opportunity for students to explore the business of soccer. And, of course, the group wrapped up their visit with a stop for hot dogs at Rutt’s Hut!

Experiences like this offer a powerful reminder that some of the most meaningful learning happens when students can step outside the classroom, make real-world connections, and discover new possibilities for their futures.
