A Sweet D-E Tradition: Honey Harvest 2026

Another sweet Honey Harvest is in the books! This cross-divisional learning opportunity, primarily for 6th graders, transforms the Middle School Teaching Kitchen into an interactive exhibit, showcasing how we harvest honey from our apiary on campus. Ms. Tasha Urbanowski, 6th Grade Dean, facilitates the annual event. As in the past, there were also jars filled with honey from both the spring and fall harvest available to taste! Beekeepers Eric, Mary, and Simon Hanan (a family trio) returned with their observation hive, containing live bees behind plexiglass; an unpacking station, where students could scrape beeswax from the honeycombs, exposing the sweet nectar; and a centrifuge to pull the honey down into a large container for collection. The lesson tied nicely into a unit on historical agriculture that Mr. Sam Wallman’s 6th grade class is currently working on. “It’s so cool that we get to do this together as a class,” said Dean H. ’33. From the hive to the classroom, discovery is always in season!
